Trauma-informed community

Developing and implementing a model for coping with collective trauma and strengthening the resilience of communities that foster recovery among heir members.

The harsh effects of the war on communities in southern and northern Israel have focused attention on the need to develop an innovative community-based model for coping with collective trauma. These regions have a range of individual and group therapies, but there is a lack of a holistic response for functional communities: groups that share a common interest or purpose but are not necessarily geographically based. These communities currently receive no support, despite their crucial role in fostering recovery processes among their members.

Trauma-informed Community is a joint Initiative of Rashi and the National Insurance Funds that aims to strengthen the resilience of communities affected by the war. The initiative focuses on creating spaces that enhance the sense of safety and reduce the symptoms of trauma while promoting empowerment, engagement and local leadership.

The initiative’s activity includes: identifying and relevant communities, mapping their needs, providing tailored training and guidance in each community, and building or adapting physical facilities for use as community hubs. In addition, a forum for community leaders and a network of learning communities will be established to promote mutual growth and strengthen the sense of belonging. Activities will be carried out in collaboration with regional councils, government bodies, and civil society organizations.
