התכנית למתן ארוחת צהריים חמה ומזינה בבתי ספר יסודיים וגנים כמרכיב חיוני של יום חינוך ארוך יצאה לדרך בעקבות פיילוט שיזמה קרן רש”י עם המוסד לביטוח לאומי. עמותת תפנית בחינוך מרשת רש”י לקחה על עצמה את הפעלת התכנית בשנים הראשונות תוך הרחבתה להיקף של מאות אלפי ילדים, כאשר קיימותה כתכנית לאומית מובטחת בחוק “ארוחה יומית לתלמיד” (2005).
