Education for Life: local authorities

Supporting cities in the development of infrastructure for advancing informal education opportunities for children and youth.

One of the main investment channels of the Education for Life initiative focuses on strengthening the capacity of cities to advance informal education as an integral part of the education system.

The local authority, which coordinates all the community-based informal education in town, can directly influence the quality and variety of programs, which in turn affects the participation rate. To do so, it needs to develop infrastructure for operating and expanding programs, and to shift the focus from isolated initiatives to a systemic, professional, and data-informed approach.

Together with the local authorities, we work to define municipal policy and goals, develop work plans and more. A key initiative in this area is the Opportunity Hub – an innovative system designed to increase participation in informal education activities. Using a comprehensive municipal database and local staff, the system allows every child and youth to find and join programs suited to his or her age and individual interests. At the same time, it serves the local authority as a management tool for monitoring and effective, data-driven planning.
